Acoustic neuroma (neurinoma, vestibular schwannoma) is a benign tumour that occurs in the canal connected to the brain and the inner ear.
Acoustic neuroma is caused when the cells that line a cranial nerve multiplies and therefore, creates a tumour.
The early symptoms of acoustic neuroma include:
- A ringing in the ear (tinnitus)
- Numb face
- Impairment of the ear
As the tumour advances, later symptoms may increase in severity. These symptoms may include:
- Facial pain
- Vision problems
- Double vision
- Twitching of the face
- Numbness in the face area
- Headaches
Tests that are usually accompanied to diagnose acoustic neuroma include:
- MRI scan
- CT scan
Treatment options of acoustic neuroma include:
- Monitoring
- Stereotactic procedure
- Surgery
